Step 2 — Position Analysis

Position Classification

Opponent has passed from standing closed guard to side control (near-side). Member is on their back, hips pinned, shoulders flat.

How the sweep failed — root cause

The lasso grip was broken before the sweep was initiated. Member grabbed sleeve with right hand and attempted the lasso sweep, but opponent had already posted on member's hip with their left hand and stepped over — breaking the lasso grip at the exact moment the sweep was launched. Without the lasso, the sweep has no lever — it's structurally impossible.

Grip & Body Position at t=0

Member (bottom): Closed guard established, right hand on opponent's left sleeve (developing lasso), left hand on opponent's right triceps

Opponent (top): Standing, both hands free, hips high

Member's hips: Flat on mat — no hip escape initiated before grip attempt

Step 3 — Sequence Breakdown

Time Event Who benefits
t = 0s Opponent stands from closed guard — establishing posture Opponent
t = 4s Member establishes lasso grip on opponent's left sleeve Member
t = 8s Opponent posts on member's right hip with left hand — breaking lasso geometry Opponent
t = 10s Member attempts lasso sweep WITHOUT lasso grip — sweep collapses immediately Opponent
t = 12s Opponent steps over face, pins member's near-side shoulder to mat Opponent
t = 15s Member in side control — hip escape too late; no frames established Opponent

Step 4 — Key Principle Identified

Before any guard recovery, establish frames at the elbows.

The lasso controls the opponent's posture — losing it first makes the sweep structurally impossible. The member's mistake was not the lasso attempt itself; it was launching the sweep without verifying the lasso was still intact AND without having a hip escape frame ready in case the grip broke.

Analogy: Trying to lift a car after someone has already let go of the handbrake. The motion is correct but the prerequisite condition was lost.

Step 5 — Drilling Roadmap

Drill 1: Lasso grip retention under resistance (3×20 daily)

Partner attempts to break lasso grip by posting on hip. Member holds lasso for 30 seconds per round. Goal: grip intact at 80%+ of rounds by week 3.

Drill 2: Hip-up escape sequence from bottom closed guard (3×20 daily)

Partner in standing passer's position. Member drills: (1) frame at elbow, (2) hip escape away from posted hand, (3) re-establish lasso. No sweep — just retention. Speed increases each week.

Drill 3: Lasso sweep with live resistance (2×10 per side, 3×/week)

Full lasso sweep from closed guard with partner at 50% resistance. Partner taps floor when grip breaks — member must re-establish grip before continuing the sweep. This ingrains the grip-first habit.
